How to build a great LinkedIn page
LinkedIn is a powerful tool, and it's usually the first place a recruiter or prospective employer will go to check you out if they're considering you for a role. Here are five important things to think about when crafting your LinkedIn page.
1. What searches do you want to appear in?
Think like a recruiter. If a recruiter were looking for you, what would they search for? Do some research and create an exhaustive list of keywords that recruiters might use when looking for someone for your dream job.
If you're using LinkedIn for business development, the same logic applies. Besides being your virtual business cards, you want to make sure you're showing up in the searches by your target market when they're looking for someone with your expertise.
2. Optimize with keywords
LinkedIn may be a social network and a professional platform, but it's also a powerful search engine. Recruiters are trained in boolean search logic and also have access to advanced filters, which means they will likely conduct very targeted searches when working to fill a role. Once you have your list of keywords, make sure to optimize by working the keywords into the different sections of your profile, especially the heading.
3. Check your picture
Make sure that your picture is bright, clear, cropped close, and professional.
4. Consider your background
This is your place to standout. If you can, try to think of a creative way to represent your expertise visually.
5. Add media
There are multiple sections on the profile where you can add links, photos, and videos. Think of creative ways to highlight items from your portfolio.
